How to Apply for West Point United States Military Academy?

The application process for the United States Military Academy requires slightly more preparation than many other colleges, but following these 7 steps can help. Follow the steps below to start and complete your West Point application.

Step 1. : Confirm Eligibility
Candidates must meet certain requirements specified by public law in order to be considered for admission to West Point.
You must:
** Be at least age 17, but not 23 or older, on July 1 of the year you enter West Point
** Be a U.S. Citizen (See Information for International Cadets for exceptions)
** Not be married
** Not be pregnant
** Not be legally responsible for child support
** If you are a naturalized citizen, you must provide documentation.

Step 2. : Apply Online
Start your application by opening an account on our Candidate Portal. The application window opens February 1st of your junior year in high school.
To start an application you will need:
** Your birthday
** Your home address
** Your high school’s address
** Your Congressional District
** Applications are due January 31st of your senior year.

Step 3. : Take College Entrance Exams
Test scores are required, and applicants may choose either the SAT or the ACT. If you are a junior, it is to your advantage to take the SAT or ACT by the end of your junior year.

TIP: Take the tests as many times as you wish. There is no penalty for multiple attempts, and we will super-score your results, meaning we will consider your best performance in each category.

The West Point Admissions Committee remains committed to a holistic assessment of applicant credentials, which include reviews of academic achievement, academic aptitude, leadership experiences, physical fitness, and other unique attributes during the application process.

Step 4. : Connect with our Field Force
West Point Field Force members are local volunteer Admissions representatives of the U.S. Military Academy. Field Force members are an invaluable resource when navigating the application process at West Point. All applications must include an interview. A Field Force representative will contact you to schedule the interview.

Step 5. : Apply for a Nomination
** A nomination is required to attend West Point. There are two types: Congressional (your Representative or one of your State’s Senators) and Service-Connected.

** Each Congressional Representative and Senator has their own requirements and deadlines for nomination applications, but all of them are due sometime in the fall. As soon as you confirm your basic eligibility, you should check your Representative’s and Senators’ websites for their specific nomination timelines and requirements.

** We strongly recommend that you apply to ALL possible nomination sources. No single nomination path will guarantee your appointment to West Point.

Step 6. : Get a Medical Examination
** The Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB) will provide the location and date of your exam. The DoDMERB website is useful to Track Your Medical Status

** Take your medical exam as soon as possible! It can take several months to get qualified. USMA will send your information to DoDMERB, who will then contact you. If you haven’t been scheduled by DoDMERB by the fall of your high school senior year, contact your regional Admissions Officer.

Step 7. : Take the Candidate Fitness Assessment
Qualified Applicants will receive an email directing them to the CFA Testing Instructions. The CFA consists of six events:
** Basketball throw (from a kneeling position)
** Cadence pull-ups or flexed-arm hang (women’s option)
** 40-yard shuttle run (for time)
** Modified Sit-ups (number completed in 2 minutes)
** Push-ups (number completed in 2 minutes)
** 1-mile run (for time)

Eligibility of West Point Admission

I’m younger than the age requirement. How can I prepare?
Many middle school and early high school students are already interested in attending West Point. You may have a relative who served in the military or heard about West Point from a current cadet on a hometown visit. However you learned about West Point, it is never too early to begin preparing for your success!

I’m an international student. Can I apply to West Point?
** Yes! International cadets are fully assimilated into the Corps of Cadets. Their four-year experience here is identical to that of U.S. cadets.
** Up to 60 international cadets may study at West Point at any given time. Eligible countries are selected on an annual basis by the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Department of Defense. The American embassies notify invited nations to nominate up to six candidates per country to compete for admission to West Point.
** To apply for admission to West Point, contact the U.S. Defense Attaché Office at the American Embassy in your country. This office serves as the link between the student, the host nation, and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
** The application process for international students is essentially the same as that for U.S. citizens; however, you must be sponsored by a national-level government official.

Do you accept transfer students?
No. Students in college or with previous college credit may apply to West Point if they meet the basic requirements. However, those students still enter West Point as plebes (freshmen) and must complete the four-year program.

I’m a naturalized citizen. What additional documentation will you need?

You will need to provide one of the following:
** United States Passport
** Your original citizenship certificate
** Immigration & Naturalization Service Citizenship Verification form G-639 (preferred)

FAQ on West Point

What are the academic requirements?
Academics account for about 60% of your application score. This is a combination of your high school grades and your standardized test scores. We will look at your transcripts for freshman, sophomore, junior, and first semester senior year when making our student acceptance decisions.

To qualify academically at West Point, you should have an above average high school or college academic record. A complete transcript of your academic achievement will be evaluated to determine your qualification. You should perform well on the ACT or the SAT. These tests indicate your potential for academic success during your first year in college.

What does the timeline for completing the application look like?

** There are many components to a West Point Application. Please review the Application Timeline to better understand the timeframes for completing each part of the application.
** Do not wait until the deadline for each portion of the application.
** It is normal for setbacks to occur, so err on the side of early completion wherever possible.
** During all stages of the application process, we highly encourage you to contact your Field Force Representative.

Where can I get help with my application?
If you have specific questions not answered by these FAQ, contact your regional admissions team either by email or by phone during business hours (9 :00am – 5:00pm Eastern Time).

What happens after I fill out the Candidate Questionnaire?
Your Candidate Questionnaire will be evaluated by the Admissions Office to determine whether or not you are eligible for admission to West Point.

The summer before your senior year (typically around June 1st) the Admissions office notifies eligible applicants that they can now complete the Candidate Checklist and provides instructions for completing the remainder of the online application. If you submit your Candidate Questionnaire after the Candidate Checklist is released, your Candidate Checklist will be opened in a day or two (if you are eligible).
