What is Apple Swift Student Challenge?

Apple is proud to support and uplift the next generation of developers, creators, and entrepreneurs with the Swift Student Challenge. The Challenge has given thousands of student developers the opportunity to showcase their creativity and coding capabilities through app playgrounds, and earn real-world skills that they can take into their careers and beyond. All Challenge winners will receive one year of membership in the Apple Developer Program, a complimentary voucher to take an App Development with Swift certification exam, and a special gift from Apple. Challenge submissions are due by Sunday, February 25, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. PST.

Eligibility of Swift Student Challenge

The Swift Student Challenge is designed for student developers who are cultivating their software development skills. Make sure to review the current eligibility conditions to confirm that you’re qualified to participate. Please note that we can’t accept submissions from applicants who are employed as professional developers.

Applying :
To be eligible for the Challenge, at the time you submit your app playground you must:
** Be 13 years of age or older in the United States, or the equivalent minimum age in the relevant jurisdiction (for example, 16 years of age in the European Union);*
** Be registered for free with Apple as an Apple developer or be a member of the Apple Developer Program; and

** Fulfill one of the following requirements
:
i. Be enrolled in an accredited academic institution or official homeschool equivalent;
ii. Be enrolled in a STEM organization’s educational curriculum;
iii. Be enrolled in an Apple Developer Academy; or
iv. Have graduated from high school or equivalent within the past 6 months and be awaiting acceptance or have received acceptance to an accredited academic institution.

** You can receive a Swift Student Challenge award up to four times.

Building your app playground :
Create an interactive scene in an app playground that can be experienced within three minutes. Be creative. If you need inspiration, use the provided templates for a head start on more advanced creations. Make them your own by adding graphics, audio, and more.

Submission Requirements for Swift Student Challenge

** You must complete all required fields on the submission form and upload all required files and documentation before submitting.
** You must provide a PDF, PNG, or JPEG of your current class schedule or other current proof of enrollment and the contact information for your dean or principal.

** Class schedules or other current proof of enrollment is accepted in all languages and must clearly show:
i. Your name;
ii. The organization or school name; and
iii. The dates showing it’s currently valid.

** Your submission must be an app playground (.swiftpm) in a ZIP file.
** Your creation should not rely on a network connection and any resources used in your app playground should be included locally in the ZIP file. Submissions will be judged offline.
** Your ZIP file can be up to 25 MB.
** Your app playground must be fully functioning, and be built with and run on Swift Playgrounds 4.4 or later on iPadOS 16 or macOS 13.5, or later, or Xcode 15 on macOS 13.5 or later. You may incorporate the use of Apple Pencil.
** All content should be in English.
** You must provide an essay answer written by you for all required questions on the submission form.

** Your app playground must either be created entirely by you as an individual or be based on a Swift Playgrounds template modified entirely by you as an individual. Group work and app playgrounds created using artificial intelligence tools will not be considered.

** You acknowledge and agree that you are solely responsible for the content of your submission. If your submission includes any open source software, music, photos, artwork, or any other content that you do not have ownership rights in, you agree to (a) comply with all applicable licensing terms and copyright obligations and (b) provide an explanation of why it was used.

** You must comply with the terms of the software you use when creating your app playground (either the Swift Playgrounds Software License Agreement or the Xcode Software License Agreement).

** You hereby grant to Apple, its affiliates, and agents, a nonexclusive, worldwide, fully paid-up, royalty-free license to reproduce, host, process, display, transmit, modify, create derivative works of, and otherwise use your submission solely in order for Apple to evaluate your submission for the Challenge.

Judging of Swift Student Challenge

All decisions made by the judges are final and scoring is confidential. Due to the number of applications received, commentary and feedback on the submission will not be provided. Submissions will be judged on;
** Technical accomplishment in the submitted app playground;
** Creativity of ideas in the submitted app playground; and
** Content of written responses to the questions in the submission form.

Awards of Swift Student Challenge

** Up to three hundred and fifty (350) Swift Student Challenge awards, including fifty (50) Distinguished Winner awards, will be given at Apple’s sole discretion. Only one award will be given per recipient.
** Each student selected for a Challenge award will receive a special gift from Apple and a complimentary voucher to take an App Development with Swift certification exam, subject to these Terms.
** In addition, one year of individual membership in the Apple Developer Program will be assigned free of charge to eligible accounts of recipients who have reached the age of majority in their region.
** For eligible accounts that already have an individual membership in the Apple Developer Program, the membership will be renewed free of charge for one year once the current membership expires.
** Recipients who have not yet reached the age of majority in their region can contact Apple once they reach the age of majority and request to have their membership enabled. This membership is not transferrable.
** Apple is not responsible for lost or damaged awards. There will be no substitution of awards. All applicable taxes or fees are the sole responsibility of the recipient.
